The quick answer
Closed models usually lead on raw quality and convenience. Open models win on privacy, customisation and long-term cost.
A simple checklist
Ask four questions: does the data have to stay private, do you need fine-tuning, how much volume do you expect and who will maintain it?
- Private data → open or self-hosted
- Best quality quickly → closed API
- High volume → compare cost per task
Many teams use both
A common pattern is a closed model for hard reasoning and a small open model for routine, high-volume tasks.

Thanks for sharing the template. Copying it straight into my workflow.
Interesting take. I would love to see a follow-up with more advanced examples.
